How we measure

• Status is judged on Saturday night, the hardest night of the weekend. % booked is booked sites out of the sites you can reserve that night; walk-in, first-come, closed and phone-only sites are left out.
• Sold out means no open sites. Almost sold out means 85% or more booked; filling up, 60% or more.
• Some state systems hide open sites more than about six months ahead but still show bookings. For those parks we say “at least X% booked”, and a park counts as sold out at 97% booked.
• We check each reservation system about once a week, so cancellations between checks don't show up here. Coverage is the most popular parks in each state, not every campground.
