Photo: NPSLodgepole Campground sits at 6,700 feet on the banks of the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River, just two miles from the General Sherman Tree — the largest tree on Earth by volume. With 207 sites spread across tent-only, standard, walk-to, and RV categories, it's the largest and most central campground in Sequoia National Park. Demand is classified as Very High every single day of the week, and there are currently zero available site-nights in the next 14 days, so timing your reservation precisely is everything.
We analyzed 20,891 reservations at Lodgepole Campground across seven months of recorded booking data.
June through August is peak season with 4,200–4,600+ reservations per month and Very High demand every day of the week — beautiful but intensely competitive. September offers nearly identical weather at 6,700 feet with measurably lower volume (4,117 reservations vs. August's 4,643) and is the best balance of conditions and availability. May and November are the only months where last-minute bookings represent a third or more of all reservations, making them the practical windows for flexible travelers.
Lodgepole sits directly on the Generals Highway, accessible by private vehicle year-round when roads are open, though winter closures can affect access at elevation. The free Sequoia Shuttle runs seasonally and connects Lodgepole to the Giant Forest, Giant Forest Museum, and other key trailheads, reducing the need to drive and park at each stop. The General Sherman Tree trailhead is two miles from camp and reachable by shuttle or a short drive.
Sequoia & Kings Canyon charges a $35 per vehicle entrance fee, valid for 7 days at both parks. Nightly camping fees at Lodgepole vary by site type — check Recreation.gov for current rates at booking, as fees differ between standard, tent-only, and walk-to sites. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass ($80) covers the entrance fee for the pass holder's vehicle and is worth purchasing if you plan to visit two or more national parks in a year.
The maximum stay at Lodgepole is 14 days. Lodgepole Village is adjacent to the campground and has a market, deli, showers, and laundry — making it one of the better-stocked campground locations in the Sierra Nevada. Three Rivers, California, about 15 miles down Generals Highway, is the nearest full-service town for gas, groceries, and restaurants before you head up to elevation.
