Photo: Michele Asbury, NPSUpper Pines is Yosemite Valley's largest campground, placing 237 sites within easy walking distance of iconic trailheads, the Merced River, and the valley's shuttle system. With 48,101 reservations analyzed, it's one of the most competitive campgrounds in the country — sites routinely disappear within minutes of the monthly release window. That said, 30.6% of bookings happen within a week of arrival, meaning last-minute campers still have a real shot if they know when to look.
We analyzed 48,101 reservations at Upper Pines to surface the exact patterns — release-window spikes, cancellation hours, and monthly demand shifts — that determine whether you get a site.
June through August is peak season — demand is highest and last-minute availability drops to 24–27%, meaning you need a confirmed reservation before you arrive. September and October offer a strong balance of good weather and slightly more flexibility, with last-minute rates rising to 25–31%. January and February are the most accessible months with last-minute rates above 38%, but expect cold temperatures, limited services, and potential road closures.
Private vehicles can access Upper Pines directly, but once you're in Yosemite Valley, the free valley shuttle system makes it easy to reach trailheads and visitor facilities without moving your car. Parking in the valley is limited and congested during peak months, so plan to use the shuttle for day activities. Note that Tioga Road and other high-elevation routes may be closed from late fall through late spring, which affects access to areas beyond the valley floor.
Yosemite charges a $35 per vehicle entrance fee, valid for seven days. Nightly camping fees at Upper Pines are $36 per night. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass ($80) covers the entrance fee for the pass holder's vehicle, making it worthwhile if you're visiting multiple national parks in a year — but it does not cover the nightly camping fee.
Upper Pines enforces a 7-night maximum stay. Cell service in Yosemite Valley is limited and unreliable — download offline maps before you arrive. The nearest full-service town for supplies is El Portal, about 14 miles west, with Mariposa offering more options roughly 36 miles out. Generator hours are restricted to specific windows in the campground, so confirm current rules with the park before arrival.
