Photo: Eric Bissmeyer, NPSLower Pines Campground sits at the heart of Yosemite Valley, offering 74 sites along the Merced River with direct access to iconic trails, meadows, and valley views. Its central location makes it one of the most sought-after campgrounds in the entire national park system. Demand is relentless every day of the week — every single day of the week is rated Very High — so understanding exactly how and when reservations open is the difference between sleeping under the pines and driving home empty.
We analyzed 8,145 reservations at Lower Pines to surface the exact windows, hours, and patterns that give campers a real edge.
May offers the best odds if you're relying on last-minute availability, with 36.4% of reservations booked under a week out — the highest rate of any month. September balances favorable weather with a 26.8% last-minute rate, making it the strongest shoulder-season option. August is the hardest month across all 8,145 reservations analyzed, with only 22.9% of sites going last-minute, so plan to be on Recreation.gov the morning the 5-month window opens if summer is your target.
Lower Pines sits directly on the Yosemite Valley Shuttle loop, making it easy to reach trailheads, visitor services, and other campgrounds without driving. Private vehicles are permitted on the Valley floor, but parking at popular trailheads fills by mid-morning in summer, so the free shuttle is a practical necessity. The campground itself is flat and accessible, with no high-clearance or narrow-road concerns for rigs up to the 40-foot maximum.
Yosemite National Park charges a $35 per vehicle entrance fee, valid for 7 days. Nightly camping fees at Lower Pines are set by Recreation.gov and subject to change — confirm the current rate when booking. The America the Beautiful Interagency Annual Pass ($80) covers the entrance fee for the pass holder's vehicle and is worth it if you visit two or more national parks in a year, though it does not reduce nightly camping fees.
The maximum stay at Lower Pines is 7 days, enforced while campground is open. Cell service in Yosemite Valley is limited and unreliable — download offline maps and your reservation confirmation before you arrive. The nearest full-service town for groceries and fuel is El Portal or Mariposa, each roughly 30–45 minutes from the Valley; the Yosemite Valley Village store stocks basics but at park prices. Check the current NPS fire and generator hour restrictions before arrival, as rules vary by season.
