Photo: PMCKirk Creek Campground sits on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean in Los Padres National Forest, offering 32 sites with unobstructed ocean views and quick access to rocky beaches and Big Sur's backcountry trails. It's one of the most sought-after drive-in campgrounds on the California coast, with demand rated Very High every day of the week and zero available site-nights in the next 14 days. Getting a site here requires either planning months ahead or knowing exactly when cancellations drop.
We analyzed 7,588 reservations at Kirk Creek Campground to surface the patterns that actually help you get a site.
April through October captures the best coastal weather and the full range of Big Sur trails, but it's also when competition peaks — September has the highest advance-booking rate in the dataset at 27.7% planned 6+ months out. December and January offer the most flexibility, with lower reservation volumes (565 and 491 respectively) and relatively higher last-minute availability rates, though coastal fog and occasional rain are trade-offs worth accepting for a site that might otherwise be impossible to get.
Kirk Creek sits directly on Highway 1, roughly 34 miles south of Carmel, so a personal vehicle is your primary way in and around Big Sur. There is no shuttle system serving this campground or the surrounding Los Padres National Forest sites. The drive along Highway 1 is narrow and winding — vehicles up to 56 feet are permitted at Kirk Creek itself, but towing a large rig through Big Sur's curves requires caution, and road conditions can change seasonally due to slides.
Los Padres National Forest does not charge a park entrance fee, but Kirk Creek has a nightly camping fee — confirm the current rate on Recreation.gov when booking. An America the Beautiful Interagency Annual Pass covers the camping fee at this National Forest campground, making it a strong value for anyone planning multiple trips. No additional permit is required to camp here beyond a standard Recreation.gov reservation.
The 14-night maximum stay applies per visit, and the campground's popularity means extensions are rarely practical. Cell service in this stretch of Big Sur is limited to nonexistent — download offline maps and confirm your reservation details before leaving town. The nearest reliable supply stop is King City to the east or Carmel to the north; arrive with everything you need, as there are no camp stores within easy reach of Kirk Creek.
