Sonoma Coast State Park stretches along 17 miles of California's most dramatic coastline, where towering sea stacks and secluded coves create an unforgettable camping backdrop. With two distinct campgrounds offering 107 sites total, you can choose between the intimate oceanfront experience at Wright's Beach or the larger, more sheltered setting at Bodega Dunes.
Sonoma Coast State Park shows dramatically different booking patterns between its two campgrounds, with Wright's Beach being one of California's most competitive coastal camping destinations.

Larger groups and RVs seeking coastal access with easier availability
Bodega Dunes offers 83 spacious campsites nestled among rolling sand dunes just inland from the coast, providing excellent coastal access without the booking competition of Wright's Beach. The campground sits about a half-mile from the ocean, connected by easy walking trails that wind through the distinctive dune landscape. Sites are well-spaced and partially sheltered by low-growing vegetation, offering more protection from coastal winds than Wright's Beach. The larger size accommodates RVs up to 31 feet, and the flush toilet facilities provide added comfort for families and longer stays. Despite being slightly inland, you'll still hear the ocean and can easily walk to Salmon Creek Beach for surfing, fishing, and beachcombing. The 43% popularity rating means you can often find availability even during peak season, making this an excellent backup option when Wright's Beach is full. The campground connects to an extensive network of hiking and equestrian trails that explore the broader Sonoma Coast State Park. Sand dunes provide natural windbreaks and create unique camping niches, while the proximity to Bodega Bay offers additional dining and supply options.

April through October offers the best weather with less fog and rain, though summer brings the most competition for sites. Spring and fall provide excellent wildlife viewing and fewer crowds, while winter camping is possible but expect frequent storms and thick marine layer fog. Whale migration seasons (December-January and March-May) add spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities.
Highway 1 provides the only access to both campgrounds, with Wright's Beach requiring a short drive north from the main park entrance. No vehicle is needed once you're camped, as beaches and trails are easily walkable from both campgrounds. The nearest supplies are in Bodega Bay, about 15 minutes south, so stock up before arriving.
Camping fees start at $35 per night and include park entrance - no separate day-use fee required. California State Parks Annual Pass provides discounts on camping fees but doesn't cover the full cost. Reservations through ReserveCalifornia.com require an additional booking fee, and cancellation policies vary by timing.
Neither campground offers electrical hookups or dump stations, so come prepared for dry camping. Coastal winds can be intense year-round - bring extra tent stakes and guy lines. Cell service is limited throughout the park, and campfires may be restricted during high fire danger periods or due to coastal winds.
