Smokemont Campground sits along the Oconaluftee River in the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering forested sites within easy reach of some of the park's most popular trails and the historic Mingus Mill. With 10,949 reservations analyzed, demand is very high every day of the week year-round — but a surprising 33.5% of bookings happen within a week of arrival, meaning spontaneous campers still have a realistic shot outside peak summer weeks.
We analyzed 10,949 reservations at Smokemont Campground to surface booking windows, cancellation patterns, and demand by month that you won't find anywhere else.
February is objectively the easiest month to get a site at Smokemont, with 76.4% of reservations made last-minute and only 191 total bookings — but expect cold temperatures in the Appalachians. October is the peak volume month (1,961 reservations) driven by fall foliage, so book it 6+ months out if you want a weekend. June and July are the hardest combination of months: June has the lowest last-minute share (23.2%) and July has the most 6-month planners (13.1%), so summer stays require the most lead time.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park does not operate a shuttle system comparable to parks like Zion, so personal vehicles are the primary way to get around. Smokemont's location on Newfound Gap Road (US-441) gives you direct access across the park's main spine to Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC. Some high-elevation roads like Clingmans Dome Road close in winter, so check current conditions with the park before planning day trips from Smokemont in late fall through early spring.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park charges no entrance fee — it is one of the few major national parks where the America the Beautiful Annual Pass provides no additional discount at the gate, though it may apply to some amenity fees. Nightly camping fees at Smokemont vary by season; check recreation.gov for current rates at the time of booking. There are no electric hookups at the sites covered here, so there are no hookup surcharges to factor in.
The maximum stay at Smokemont is 14 days, and demand is Very High every day of the week, so extensions are unlikely to be available on the fly. Cherokee, NC is the nearest town for groceries, gas, and supplies and is only a few miles from the campground. Cell service in the Smokies is inconsistent — signal tends to improve near Cherokee but can drop significantly deeper in the park, so download offline maps before you arrive.
