With over 53,000 reservations analyzed, it's one of the most in-demand campgrounds in the national park system, running at Very High demand every single day of the week. If you're targeting a summer or fall stay, plan well ahead: May is the hardest month to reserve last minute, with only 19.0% of sites filling last-minute.
We analyzed 53,436 reservations at Mather Campground to surface the patterns that give campers a real edge.
January and February are the easiest months to secure a site at Mather, with 55.8% and 54.7% of reservations made last-minute respectively — but expect cold temperatures and shorter days on the South Rim. May through September is peak season, with May recording the lowest last-minute availability in the dataset at 19.0%; if you want a summer stay, book 5+ months out. October and November offer the best balance of manageable booking competition (30.7% and 50.3% last-minute) and pleasant rim weather.
Mather Campground is served directly by the Grand Canyon Village free shuttle system, connecting you to all South Rim overlooks, the Visitor Center, and trailheads without needing your car. Private vehicles are permitted on the main South Rim roads year-round, but Hermit Road is closed to private traffic March through November — shuttle only during those months. The campground is within walking distance of the Bright Angel Trailhead and the general store, making a car largely unnecessary once you're set up.
Grand Canyon National Park charges a $35 per vehicle entrance fee, valid for 7 days. An America the Beautiful annual pass ($80) covers the entrance fee for the entire vehicle and pays for itself after two visits. Camping at Mather Campground is an additional nightly fee on top of the park entrance fee; rates vary by site type — check Recreation.gov for current pricing when booking.
Mather Campground enforces a 14-day maximum stay limit. The campground has no electrical hookups at any site, and the vehicle length limit is 30 feet — longer rigs should look at Desert View Campground or Trailer Village instead. The South Rim sits at roughly 7,000 feet elevation, so temperatures can drop sharply at night even in summer, and snow is possible October through April. The nearest full-service town for fuel and supplies beyond the village store is Tusayan, about a mile south of the park entrance.
